Desk Review

As of December 1, 2023, the journal updated its previous desk review policy, which was in effect from May 6, 2022, to November 30, 2023.

The desk review is the evaluative process conducted upon receiving a manuscript. It is the exclusive responsibility of the editor-in-chief, the director, and the editorial team of the journal, without precluding the receipt of recommendations from external collaborators of the journal.

The desk review requires a detailed understanding of the norms and guidelines set forth by Revista nuestrAmérica for manuscript submissions, as well as a thorough knowledge of the editorial profiles' scope. This serves as a guide on the aspects to be observed and actions to be taken upon receiving any manuscript (you can always rely on a team to assist in this task):

  1. Partial reading: Only the proposed title and abstract will be reviewed to determine if the thematic scope aligns with the journal's editorial profiles. If it does not meet these criteria, the submission will be dismissed, and the evaluation will not commence.
  2. Language: Accepted languages are Spanish, Portuguese, and English. It is not necessary for manuscripts to contain information in all these languages; other languages will not be accepted in this edition. In cases of submissions in languages other than the three mentioned, the journal reserves the right to translate it for publication if it is of interest, but it must be an unpublished manuscript.
  3. Authors: Verify that the authors meet the requirements for submitting a manuscript, including academic degrees or demonstrable experience. Information on academic degrees, academic affiliation, and email contact must be included for all authors without exceptions. Other information, such as ORCID or Biodata, may be required in subsequent processes.
  4. Declaration of originality, non-exclusive publication permissions, informed consent for preprint and translation use, and peer review: Ensure that the document with all the statements indicated in the title of this item is correctly attached. If this document is not present, the desk review will be deemed completed, and the peer review will only begin when the document is available. This document will serve as the journal's and the author's support for the assurance and protection of rights for each party.
  5. Similarity report: Manuscripts considered of interest to the journal will undergo a similarity report using Plagiarism Checker X software. In all cases, a human, not the software, will decide on the meaning of similarity. Similarity should be below 15%, but this percentage can rise to 20% in the case of similarity with works by the same author. In cases exceeding this maximum, judgment will be made on whether the author is committing malpractice of reuse (self-plagiarism) or may be incorrectly using citations. The report will be the first to be done, and the record will be saved.
  6. Full reading: Manuscripts considered of interest to the journal will undergo a full reading to determine if it is indeed of interest. If interest is confirmed, the process will continue; if considered outside the editorial profiles, the submission will be dismissed.
  7. References: Verify that only what is cited in the manuscript is referenced; do not allow any references that say "in press."
  8. Use of citations and references: Review the reference table and observe if any particular author, author, or journal is repeated excessively (this will prevent unethical use of references).
  9. Confirmation of submission: Within a maximum of two weeks from the manuscript's submission, confirm the receipt of the manuscript, indicating whether the submission has been dismissed (in which case the process will end) or if the submission will initiate its peer review process in a single-blind system. In case the peer review process is initiated, the similarity report must be delivered to the author, along with a document explaining the peer review process. If the declaration of originality document has not been submitted, the peer review will not continue until the document is received.

Only after the desk review can the peer review process begin. The submission for peer review can only be done with manuscripts considered of interest and possible for publication.
