Editorial policies

Any author interested in publishing in Utopía y Praxis Latinoamericana should know that our journal follows two lines of work that differ in their objectives, their audience, their publication frequency and their thematic coverage. We have a line of political and social philosophy and critical theory in regular dossiers, while in the extra-interlocuciones, we have a service line for the dissemination of scientific knowledge from Latin America to the world. We call this second line, started in 2018, Extra-Interlocuciones for lack of a better expression that accounts for the sustained work in which the same journal maintains two different periodicities. Not finding a way to express our work explicitly, we put the expression "extra" in front of the second line, even though it already constitutes a work with a constant appearance.

Scope and focus: regular Issue

Utopia y Praxis Latinoamericana was born as a response to the situation of political conflict that democracy and Latin American society are currently experiencing. But it was also born as a response committed to the philosophical analysis and the historical interpretation of culture and the social sciences in the face of Modernity crisis. Response that seeks to create new actors and scenarios from which new alternatives for critical theory and effective social change are made possible. An answer in two senses: the utopian because every authentic existential project must be framed and defined by the universe of its human evaluations; the practice because, unlike the necessary theory, it implies a type of action whose movement is capable of dialectizing the understanding of reality, but also of transforming the subjects that are part of it. With which the notion of praxis leads us back to politics, ethics and, today, science and technology. It is a response from Latin America, because it is from the Latinamerican being and thinking that the praxis of our utopian project becomes feasible.

The regular volumes of Utopia y Praxis Latinoamericana are aimed at members of the academic world who are involved in the area of political and social philosophy, social sciences and humanities research and teaching, who seeks a space for dialogue from critical perspectives.

Thematic coverage

The thematic areas that define the editorial profiles of the regular volumes of the journal are inserted in the following lines of Ibero / Latin American thought: Latin American Political Philosophy, History of Ideas, Epistemology, Theories and methodologies of Social Sciences, Social Anthropology, political and philosophical, Ethics and pragmatics, Philosophy and intercultural dialogue, Gender Studies. The respective sub-areas for each general area will be defined by the Editorial Committee, with the help of their respective national and international advisers, in order to establish the relevance of the papers presented. Preferably, research will be carried out in the area of political and social philosophy and interculturality.

Frequency of publication: Regular Issue

Utopía y praxis latinoamericana is a quarterly journal that publishes during the first month of the quarter: January-March; April-June; July-September; October-December

Focus and scope: Extra-Interlocutions Issue

Extra-Interlocutions is the collection of thematic dossiers presented by the international journal of Philosophy and Social Theory Utopia y Praxis Latinoamericana to the international community of researchers from Latin America and other continents, committed to the inter and transdisciplinary episteme of critical, alternative, emancipatory and decolonial thinking,. The editorial profiles of this collection are transversal between the various disciplines of the social sciences, which makes it possible to address relevant questions that, due to their novelty, require dissemination among international research networks. Its main objective is to publish discursive practices with another understanding of the current problems of the social sciences from practical-instrumental edges. From emergent experiences that can transform in their praxis the subjective relations of the coexistence that takes place in the public space, the interest and purpose is to hominize the world of the life that serves as sustainability to the rationality of the 21st century. Radically questioning knowledge and epistemes that, in their current present and possible future, manage to deconstruct the "support points" of the politics of Modernity and generate other relationships of otherness, perspectives, vertices, crossroads and convergences, which are involved in the non-linear dynamics of culture and history. Today, in the era of Globalization and techno-scientific hegemonies, the political value and transcendence of the living subject are at risk of perishing. The crises of the mode of production and reproduction of material goods to satisfy the contingencies of life, demands the awareness of a duty with enough phronesis to rewrite the other History that can eliminate the aporia of its own end...

The editorial line that we work on in the extra Interlocutions dossiers is called service for the dissemination of scientific knowledge from Latin America to the world. Its objective is to expand coverage in terms of dissemination in the area of social sciences in general. By this we mean to attend an unsatisfied demand that could not be covered through the editorial profiles declared in the regular editions, but through these new editions we managed to expand, making it possible to insert authors from multiple countries. This new flow of researchers allowed us to reach distant countries such as those that are now destined to publish in our journal and for us this has been a great satisfaction. We expanded our work and went beyond Ibero-America to reach, this time, a much broader international level that is now in full swing. Our objective does not end in the expansion of borders, but in the diversification of research, that is why we intensify the dissemination within Latin America with countries such as Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Chile, among others, which are always pending of our new editions in which constantly they participate.

It is an expanded audience compared to regular editions that seeks to insert authors who cover their research in the area of social sciences with pragmatic-instrumental approaches that could not be inserted in our regular dossiers due to the narrowness of our editorial profiles. Here the public is broadened and therefore we have the privilege of inserting new academic authors from areas that are, precisely, pragmatic edges in humanities and social sciences in general. Finally, it is located in the insertion of authors who investigate in social sciences from perspectives that were not covered before, and it motivated us to create extra interlocutions.

Thematic coverage

The extra interlocutions cover topics from the social sciences and humanities in general, distinguished by the preference for pragmatic-instrumental approaches.

Evaluation results and publication

The papers had a waiting period of 2 or 3 months, however, due to the large number of articles received between 2018 and 2020, our current response time is 12 months and publication is 18 months.

Plagiarism detection policy

Plagiarism cannot be considered as a mistake of who submits an article for review, but as a crime because it has intentionally concealed the recognition of the authorship of the work and is intended to appropriate the intellectual effort of others for their own benefit. For this reason, Utopía y praxis latinoamericana uses an anti-plagiarism program, which at the moment is Plagiarism Checker X. This program is used when receiving the articles and before any submission for evaluation.

Policy for detecting adulterated and artificial citations (since 2021)

In collaboration with Ediciones nuestrAmérica desde Abajo Ltda. (Chile) we implemented a reference table analysis report called References checker. The analysis reviews the recurrence of citations to the same journal and verifies whether its use is justified or is a bad practice. The analysis allows Utopia y praxis latinoamericana to have a broad perspective of the impact that citations have when considering a period of between 1 and 2 years. The work is a pioneer in the Latin American region at the level of magazines and demonstrates the interest of Utopia y praxis latinoamericana to increasingly improve its editorial management (the report is under construction in January 2021).

Anti-scam policy on website (since 2021)

The explosive growth we have had by further internationalizing our work, reaching distant continents, has also meant a constant cyber attack and scam attempts. In collaboration with Ediciones nuestrAmérica desde Abajo Ltda. (Chile) we implemented TOC checker which is an authentication system in which an unalterable record of the tables of contents of our editions is deposited. This will allow our readers and potential authors to verify what our publications are. This can prevent an author from falling victim to a scam. TOC checker acts as a witness to any security breach.
