History of the Publishing House

Initial Period

This publishing house emerges as the evolution of two academic projects led by its editor, Ismael Cáceres-Correa: 1) Latin American Academy of Humanities and 2) the editing of NuestrAmérica Journal as NuestrAmérica from Below Current. Both projects were self-managed academic associations that brought together individuals from the academic world with the purpose of publishing research in social sciences and humanities. The name NuestrAmérica from Below Current, under which the NuestrAmérica Journal was registered, has no relation to any other organization that might coincide in name and does not share rights with any other group or publisher.

All publications from the Latin American Academy of Humanities and NuestrAmérica Journal were registered, edited, and published by Ismael Cáceres-Correa, who is also the legal representative of all registered journals. The ISSNs were all registered and obtained through the ISSN agency of Chile, managed by CONICyT and currently by ANID.

The editions of the Latin American Academy of Humanities and NuestrAmérica Journal were kept separate because they maintained distinct editorial policies and selection criteria, with the Latin American Academy of Humanities focusing on academic dissemination and NuestrAmérica Journal on scientific research. Additionally, the editions of the Latin American Academy of Humanities were highly decentralized, making the deepening of published content and editorial policies more complex.

In 2015, the decision was made to transition all projects, both from the Latin American Academy of Humanities and NuestrAmérica Journal, to a publication based on international editorial quality criteria, using the working method of NuestrAmérica Journal as a reference.

A common editorial policy was adopted, updating the publishing house from 2016 onwards. Each journal team had the possibility to update only the policies related to its scope and those related to the document types they publish. The publishing house does not interfere in decisions made by academic peer reviews or internal academic decisions that the teams may take. The common editorial policy only refers to fundamental aspects for a journal to maintain quality in its editorial processes.

Current Period

In 2019, the Chilean company "Ediciones NuestrAmérica desde Abajo Ltda." was established, based in the commune of Chiguayante, Concepción, Chile. The publishing house, of private law — but with a public purpose — was created to support the work carried out through these free academic associations. With its foundation, the new publishing house aimed to professionalize its editorial processes, focusing exclusively on scientific research in the field of social sciences and humanities, with a decolonizing and critical approach.

The publishing house decided that all publications would be issued under the label "Ediciones NuestrAmérica desde Abajo." Journals that were originally published under the label "Latin American Academy of Humanities" or "Free and Popular Latin American Academy of Humanities" will use the Latin American Academy of Humanities logo and its label but will specify that they belong to the publishing house under the label "Ediciones NuestrAmérica desde Abajo."
